Why do Americans stereotype the British?

I am just wondering why do Americans think we say 'Cheerio!', ''ello gov'ner!', 'well I never!' e.t.c. all the time? NO-ONE says that here, except maybe really old-fashioned Londoners, and the proof is in every single British movie/show ever made since 1990. Only answers from Americans please
